Current KCP Award System at Dog Shows

  1. The Current Award System of the Kennel Club of Pakistan is explained below. It is important that all dog owners, exhibitors, judges, Stewards and members of Show Committees make them conversant with this system.
    1. Points are no more given in KCP Shows. Instead of points, Challenge Certificate (CC) is given. Only one dog and one bitch in each breed is eligible for a CC. Only the “Winner of Winner” Dog and “Winner of Winner” Bitch is eligible to get Challenge Certificate, but it is NOT  automatic. If a judge feels that the dog or bitch is not of sufficient quality, he or she may not award Challenge Certificate.
    2. On the Challenge Certificate the judge states; “I am of firm opinion that this dog is of such a merit as to be worthy of becoming a champion”.
    3. A dog getting three Challenge Certificates, from three different judges becomes a Champion.
    4. 2 Res CCs under two different judges are considered as 1 CC in accordance to the current KCP award system. For example if a dog has gained 2 CCs and 2 Res CCs (under two different judges) he has qualified for the Championship title.
    5. Award of CACIB and CAC, will be equal to a Challenge Certificate.
    6. Dogs and Bitches getting V-1 at German shepherd and Rottweiler Specialty Shows will not be considered equal to a Challenge Certificate. If winner of winners dog and winner of winners bitch is selected out of classes from Junior to Open then KCP will give CC to them which will count towards Championship. If this is not done then no CC will be awarded. It is incorrect to think that all V1s get a CC automatically.
    7. Unless an official  Certificate by the Kennel Club of Pakistan is issued, the dog will not be called “CHAMPION”.
    8. Once a dog is a Champion, it CANNOT compete for any more Challenge Certificates. It competes in Champion Class only.
    9. A Champion dog will compete in Champion Class only but will compete for Best of Breed, Best of Group and Best in Show.
    10. If a dog has been made Champion in a country other than Pakistan, to earn title of Pakistan Champion, the dog will have to compete in its (other than Champion Class) Class and earn three Challenge Certificates to earn title of Pakistan Champion. However, if the owner does not want Pakistan Champion title, the dog may be shown in Champion class only, but the dog will not be entitled to title of Pakistan Champion (Pak. Ch.).
    11. To encourage local breeding, an award for Pakistan Bred is included in all Classes ie., Pakistan Bred Class Winner, Pakistan Bred Winner of Winner, Best Pakistan Bred of the Breed, Best Pakistan Bred in the Group and Best Pakistan Bred in the Show.
    12. All dogs will be graded as:-
      1. Excellent
      2. Very Good
      3. Good
      4. Sufficient
      5. Disqualified
      6. Cannot be judged
      7. However, they will not be placed ie Excellent One, Excellent Two and so on.
  2. Interpretation of Grading
    1. EXCELLENT
      Excellent may only be awarded to a dog which comes very close to the ideal standard of the breed, which is presented in excellent condition, displays a harmonious, well-balanced temperament, is of high class and has excellent posture. Its superior characteristics in respect of its breed permit that minor imperfections can be ignored; it must however have the typical features of its sex.
    2. VERY GOOD
      Very Good may only be awarded to a dog, which possesses the typical features of its breed, which has well-balanced proportions and is in correct condition. A few minor faults may be tolerated but none of a morphological nature. This award can only be granted to a dog that shows class.
    3. GOOD
      Good is to be awarded to a dog that possesses the main features of its breed however showing faults provided these are not concealed.
    4. SUFFICIENT
      Sufficient must be awarded to a dog which corresponds adequately to its breed, without possessing the generally accepted characteristics or whose physical condition leaves something to be desired.
    5. DISQUALIFIED
      Disqualified must be awarded to a dog which does not correspond to the type required by the breed standard; which shows a behaviour clearly not in line with its standard or which behaves aggressively; which has testicular abnormalities; which has dental flaw or a jaw anomaly; which shows a colour and/or coat imperfection or clearly shows signs of albinism. This qualification shall also be awarded to dogs that correspond so little to a single feature of the breed that their health is threatened. It should furthermore be awarded to dogs that show eliminating faults in regard to the breed standard.
    6. CANNOT BE JUDGED
      Cannot Be Judged is to be given to any dog which does not move, constantly jumps up and down on its handler or tries to get out of the ring, makes it impossible to assess the gait and the movement or avoids constantly to be examined by the judge and makes it impossible to inspect teeth, anatomy and structure, tail or testicles. This rating is also to be given if traces of operations or treatment can be observed which seem to indicate that the exhibitor wanted to deceive the judge.
  3. Classes and Award System in the KCP Show
    1. Dogs will be judged according to the following classes:-
      1. Baby Class: Up to 6 months (Challenge Certificate CANNOT be awarded)
      2. Puppy Class: From 6 to 9 months (Challenge Certificate CANNOT be awarded)
      3. Junior Class: From 9 to 15 months (Challenge Certificate can be awarded)
      4. Intermediate Class: From 15 to 24 months (Challenge Certificate can be awarded)
      5. Open Class: 24 months and over (Challenge Certificate can be awarded)
      6. Champion Class: All Champions (Not entitled to get Challenge Certificate)
    2. Classes for CACIB Shows will be as per FCI Rules as given below:-
      1. Baby Class: 3 to 6 months (CACIB CANNOT be awarded)
      2. Puppy Class: 6 To 9 months (CACIB CANNOT be awarded)
      3. Junior Class: 9 to 18 months (CACIB CANNOT be awarded)
      4. Intermediate Class: 15 to 24 months (CACIB CAN be awarded)
      5. Open Class: 15 months and over (CACIB CAN be awarded)
      6. Champion Class: All Champion (CACIB CAN be awarded)
      7. Veteran Class: 8 years and over (CACIB CANNOT be awarded)
  4. Judging Procedure
    1. Class Judging. Dogs and Bitches will be individually and separately judged according to their classes, starting with the Baby Puppies. The judge will grade all the dogs presented but will place the exhibits 1st, 2nd and 3rd only. The dog and bitch placed First in its class, irrespective of its grading will be called “Class Winner” and will be awarded Blue Ribbon.
    2. Winner of Winners Bitch. At the conclusion of judging all classes, the steward will call all the class winner bitches (having Blue Ribbon) except winners of Baby and Puppy classes. At this stage, the judge will award Challenge Certificate (CC) to a bitch other than the winner bitch of Champion class. However, the award of CC is NOT automatic. If the judge feels that there is no bitch with “such a merit as to be worthy of becoming a champion”, he may withhold a CC. Now the judge will select Winner of Winners bitch, which obviously will be either the winner bitch of Champion class or the one, which has received a CC. This will be the Best Bitch of the Breed.
    3. Winner of Winners Dog. The above procedure will be repeated to select a Winner of Winner Dog ie., the Best Dog of the breed.
      Note: To help judge ensure that a Champion Dog is not awarded a CC, the winner of Champion class, irrespective of its catalog number will be placed first in the judging line up, followed by winners of Open, Intermediate and Junior classes.
    4. Best of Breed. After Best Dog of the Breed and Best Bitch of the Breed has been separately selected, the judge will select the Best of Breed and Second Best of the Breed.
    5. Group Winner. After Best of Breeds of all the breeds in a particular Group have been selected, the steward will call and line-up all the Best of Breed for the judge to select the Group Winner and reserve Group Winner.
    6. Best in Show. After all the ten Group Winners have been selected the steward will call all the Group Winner and line them up for the judge. The judge will select the Best Dog in the Show, the Second Best in Show and Third Best in Show.
    7. Come Back System To Select Second Best Dog. As in all Kennel Clubs of the world and FCI Shows, to select Second Best Dog in any Class a system known as “Come Back” will be followed. After Class Judgment, when Winner Of Winners is to be judged, all Class Winners will be Called for Best Bitch or Best Dog of the Breed separately. Once Best Dog or Best Bitch has been selected, the Runner Up of Class Winner will be brought back into the ring for selecting 2nd Best Dog/Bitch. Similarly, when judging Best of Breed, Once Best of Breed  has been selected, the Runner Up of the Sex (Dog or Bitch) selected as Best of Breed will be brought back into the ring for selecting 2nd Best of Breed. When selecting Best of Group, same procedure will be followed that is the Runner Up of the Best of Breed will be called in to compete for Second Best in Group. For Selecting Best in Show, both Best in Group and Second Best in Group will be called together to compete together. The Judge will select Best in Show, Second Best in Show and Third Best in Show. However, a dog which has been beaten by a dog will not be put above a non-beaten dog. Here Steward need to be vigilant and if Judge puts it above a non-beaten dog, Steward must point it to judge.
    8. Breeds Not Recognized by FCI. American Bully, Bakarwal and Bully Kutta will be shown in group 11 (Non-recognized FCI Breeds). They will not get CACIB but will get Challenge Certificate (CC). This is allowed by FCI.
    9. Local Bred Best in Show & Local Bred Second Best in Show. In KCP Rules of Show Judging there is provision of selecting a Best in Show Local Bred and Second Best Local Bred Dog. It is a very good provision to encourage local breeding. With effect from Show Season 2018/19, selecting Best and Second Best Local bred dog will be compulsory in all shows sanctioned by KCP. As GSDCP does not select a Best in Show, GSDCP is excluded from this rule. KCP will follows following system:-

      If a Group Winner is NOT a Local Bred then Best Local bred in the Group will also be declared and will be eligible to compete for Best Local bred in Show but will wait till Judge selects BIS. If Best in Show and Second Best in Show both are Local breds then Best in Show dog will get two trophies; one for being Best in Show and other for being Local Bred Best in Show. If Best in Show and Second Best in Show are imported dogs then Local Bred Best of Group will compete separately for Local Bred Best in Show and Second Local Bred Best in Show.

  5. Title of Grand Champion. To earn the title of Grand Champion, a dog will have to earn 125 Points (One hundred and twenty five) Points. The points will be counted as given below:-
    1. Each Challenge Certificate: 10 Points (Maximum 30 Points)
    2. Best of Breed: 10 Points
    3. Best of Group: 15 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    4. Best in Shows: 25 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    5. Reserve Best in Show: 20 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    6. Third Best in Show: 10 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    7. In one Show a dog can get only a maximum of 30 Points.
    8. Unless a Certificate is issued by the Kennel club of Pakistan, dog is forbidden to be called a Grand Champion.
  6. Dog of the Year. Each year, in February, Dog of the Year, Second Dog of the Year and Third Dog of the Year will be declared in the month of January each year based on the performance of the dogs from 1 January to 31 December of the previous year. For deciding various positions of the Dog of the Year, points will be counted as follows:-
    1. Best of Breed: 10 Points
    2. Best of Group: 15 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    3. Best in Shows: 25 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    4. Reserve Best in Show: 20 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    5. Third Best in Show: 10 Points (Only in All Breed Shows)
    6. In one Show a dog can get only a maximum of 30 Points.

FAQs

Question. Can a dog win Best in Show (BIS) in a CACIB show without being awarded CACIB?

Answer. “YES” it is possible. For example a dog who wins a Junior class and has also been declared Best of Breed (BOB) and Best in grouo (BIG) then he can compete for the Best in Show (BIS). Although he couldn’t get CACIB being a Junior Dog, according to the rules but he can be declared Best in Show (BIS).

Question. A junior dog cannot be awarded CACIB. If a junior dog is declared best dog/bitch of the breed, what award he/she will be awarded with?

Answer.  A junior dog cannot get CACIB, therefore if a junior dog is placed best dog or best bitch of the breed, it will get a CC which will count towards National Championship. This system is followed by all Kennel Clubs.

Question. Can a judge, judge any dog of his own breeding?

Answer. There is no bar on this but the dog must not be living on the premises of that judge at least three months prior to the date of the show.

Question. Can a steward stand for stewardship if a dog of his ownership is being shown in the ring?

Answer. A steward cannot stand for stewardship if a dog of his ownership is being shown. As for family ownership goes there is no bar. However, a dog of ownership of any family member must not be living at the premises of the steward at least three months prior to the date of the show.
